Why are TikTokers rolling glass bottles down stairs until they break?

For some people, ASMR videos — which can range from things like the sound of ice clinking in a glass to the sounds of soda bottles being opened and even nature sounds — can be soothing or stimulating in an enjoyable way.

As the videos have become popular across social media platforms, a new form of ASMR video is currently making the rounds thanks to TikTokers who have started rolling glass bottles down stairways until they shatter.

According to KnowYourMeme.com, TikToker Lillo Alencar @lilloalencarr started the glass-bottle-on-a-stairway ASMR trend in May 2022 when he posted a video of a jar of what appears to be maraschino cherries rolling down a staircase.

That video received more than 897,000 views and was followed by a few more glass-rolling videos.

It wasn’t until he posted a video of a glass bottle full of alcohol rolling down the stairs and shattering, spilling its contents everywhere, that the video trend really took off, however.

So far, the original glass-shattering-on-a-stairway video has accumulated 8 million views.

“idk what this is, but I like it,” wrote @roor206 on the original TikTok.

“I love this,” added @pgoldiee.

Since the video of the bottle of alcohol, Alencar has posted almost exclusively glass-shattering-on-a-staircase videos, sometimes rolling the bottles down or sometimes just tossing them.

“Well this escalated,” noted @anyamth on one of the bottles-being-tossed videos.

TikTokers like @chexyyt (aka @chexylaughs) have even done compilation videos of different kinds of glass bottles — such as those filled with beads or sand, champagne bottles filled with champagne or beer bottles — rolling down the stairs.

“Dramatic yet satisfying breaks,” noted @uwais_mulla.

The company Bush’s Beans (@bushsbeans) even tried to get in on the trend, which many people seemed to appreciate.

“Now that’s my kind of ASMR,” commented @lar.miller.

Reversing the video also amped up the ASMR value for some.

However, despite the ASMR trend’s popularity, not everyone is a fan.

“I wanna know who is cleaning this mess,” commented @angel.maria.z on one post.

“Idk this kinda stressed me out a bit,” wrote @youngcleopatraa.

“All I can think about is the glass you’ll be picking out of your feet for the next 10 business years,” added @xprincesspariahx.
